How do I put on protective gloves correctly?

To put on protective gloves properly, follow these steps:

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water to avoid spreading germs.
Check the gloves for holes and tears before putting them on.
Grasp the glove by the cuff and gently pull it over your hand.
Pull the glove as far as possible over the fingers and make sure it fits well.
Put on the other glove in the same way.
If you wear the gloves over your clothes, make sure the gloves are over the cuffs to avoid contamination.
After putting on the gloves, avoid putting your hands on your face or rubbing them on surfaces to avoid contamination.

What type of protective glove should I wear?

There are different types of protective gloves, including disposable, reusable, latex, nitrile and vinyl.

Disposable gloves are intended for single use and should be discarded after each use. They are best used to avoid contamination when working with potentially infectious material or handling food.

Reusable gloves can be used several times and are usually made of thicker material than disposable gloves. They can be used for protection during repeated work with potentially hazardous substances or materials.

Latex gloves are soft, elastic and durable. They offer protection against bacteria and viruses, but are controversial as they can cause allergies in some people.

Nitrile gloves are an alternative to latex gloves as they also provide protection against bacteria and viruses but are less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Vinyl gloves are another alternative to latex gloves and are most commonly used in the food industry. However, they are less durable and offer less protection than latex or nitrile gloves.

How do I wear a protective mask properly?

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use a hand sanitiser before handling your mask.
Remove the mask from its packaging and check for damage or holes.
Position the mask over your mouth, nose and chin
make sure the mask fits snugly to minimise air and droplet ingress. Press the nose clip to ensure a tighter fit around the nose.
Fasten the ear loops or straps behind the ears or at the back of the head, depending on the type of mask.
Avoid touching the front of the mask while wearing it. If you must touch the mask, wash your hands first.
Avoid pulling the mask under your chin or onto your forehead while you are talking or breathing.
Wear the mask for the recommended duration and change it regularly.
If you need to remove the mask, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use hand sanitiser first.
Remove the mask by the ear loops or straps and dispose of it immediately in a closed container or wash it if using a fabric mask.

How long can I wear a mask and how often should I change it?

The length of time a mask can be worn depends on several factors, including the type of mask, the environment in which it is worn and the user's activity. Disposable masks, such as surgical masks, should normally be discarded after a single use. Cloth masks can be reused but should be washed after each use.

It is recommended to change the mask at least every 4 hours or when it has become damp. Also, if the mask is visibly soiled or damaged, it should be replaced immediately. When removing the mask, ensure that the mask is only touched by the ear loops or straps and that the front of the mask is not touched.

It is also important to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water or use a hand sanitiser before putting on or taking off the mask to avoid contamination. Note that wearing a mask alone is not enough to prevent infection. It is important to also take other protective measures such as regular hand washing and physical separation to minimise the transmission of infectious diseases.

What types of protective masks are there and which one should I choose?

There are different types of protective masks for different purposes and levels of protection. The three most common types of protective masks are

disposable surgical masks: these masks consist of several layers and are mainly used in medical facilities. They are loose and provide little protection against the transmission of infectious diseases.
FFP masks: FFP masks offer higher protection than surgical masks and are available in three protection levels (FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3). They are tighter fitting and filter at least 94% of airborne particles, including viruses and bacteria.
fabric masks: these masks are made of cotton or other fabrics and are reusable. They offer limited protection against the transmission of infectious diseases, especially if they are made up of several layers.

The type of mask you should choose depends on your purpose. If you work in an environment where you are at higher risk of transmitting infectious diseases, you should use an FFP mask or a higher quality protective mask. If you only want to wear a mask to protect your surroundings, a fabric mask is sufficient. It is also important to wear and change masks properly to avoid contamination.
